Magnification

It is impossible to accurately examine or cut and polish a stone without good magnification. We suggest using 10X or higher magnification for faceting so you can see if all the fine scratches have been eliminated during polishing.

Closing one eye, or squinting while looking through loupes can cause eye strain. To reduce eye strain, keep both eyes open when looking through the loupe. This may take a while to get used to, but it can prevent you from getting headaches. After all, faceting is supposed to be fun.

Bausch and Lomb 11X Glasses Loupe

The Bausch and Lomb 11X Loupe has two lenses (4X and 7X) that combine to create 11X magnification. The quality of the lenses is good, but what I like best about the Bausch and Lomb Glasses Loupe is that it attaches to your glasses. This eliminates the "where-did-I-put-my-loupe-down" syndrome that can eat up more time on cutting a stone than the whole roughing-in procedure.

Some of my faceting students who don't wear glasses purchase cheap drug store glasses and remove the lenses so they can use the Bausch and Lomb Glasses Loupe.

Hasting 10X Triplet Loupes
These 10X triplets feature a combination of three high quality lenses providing superior optical performance. The wide 21mm and 20.5mm apertures of these loupes causes less eye strain than smaller aperture loupes. The difference between these Hastings 10X loupes is the color of the plating and 0.5mm in diameter. The achromatic lenses in these loupes are made in Japan and the loupes are assembled in China. Each Hastings 10X loupe comes complete with a carrying case.

Lighted Magnifier 10X - $16.95

This magnifier has an achromatic lens. The optics aren't the best quality, but the wide lens opening provides a very bright image. The battery powered light (shown in the photo on the right) makes the object being viewed even brighter.

OptiVisors
OptiVisors provide convenient magnification because they are worn on the head and can be easily flipped up and out of the way when not in use. OptiVisors feature high quality glass optics and are available in different magnifications as listed below.

Note: All other inexpensive and moderately priced visor-style magnifiers use inferior plastic lenses. So, even though OptiVisors are a little more expensive than similar looking products, they are far superior in optical quality, don't scratch as easily and are less prone to creating eye strain.

We also have the bright Xenon Laserbeam VisorLight accessory which clips onto OptiVisors to better illuminate and inspect your work piece. The VisorLight requires two AA size batteries.
